Tante donne mi dicono che desidererebbero partorire naturalmente, magari anche a casa, però non riescono a prendere questa decisione perché non conoscono nessuno della cerchia dei loro amici, parenti o conoscenti che lo abbia fatto. Allora rinunciano perché non vogliono essere diverse, non vogliono infrangere dei tabù. Non riescono ad allontanarsi dalla visione della nascita come malattia e della delega alla tecnologia come risposta unica e sicura alle paure. Non riescono a vedere il parto naturale come un processo sano, sicuro, dove semmai, è pericoloso interferire e disturbale.
Ma sempre più donne, e coppie, seguono il loro sentire più profondo, e sempre più operatori della nascita rispondono con azioni di sostegno concreto. E, molto lentamente, si creano nuove forme di aggregazioni, gruppi di pari (gruppi pre e post parto, associazioni di donne e di genitori, gruppi per il sostegno dell'allattamento materno, mailing list di discussione in internet) dove le persone si confrontano, si aiutano e si sostengono nelle nuove scelte del diventare parents, and thus create a new terrain of social sharing: a new culture of birth.
